Docklands Man and Van Health and Safety Policy
Docklands Man and Van is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our responsibilities, standards, and working practices to prevent injury, ill health, and damage to property during moves of any size.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to conduct all removal and transport operations in a safe and controlled manner. We aim to:
1. Prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health.
2. Protect customers, staff, and the public from risks arising from our activities.
3. Comply with all applicable health and safety laws and recognised industry best practice.
4. Continuously improve our safety performance through review, training, and monitoring.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Docklands Man and Van holds overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes:
1. Ensuring suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for our removal services, including domestic and commercial moves.
2. Providing clear information, instructions, and supervision so that tasks such as lifting, loading, unloading, and driving are completed safely.
3. Supplying and maintaining appropriate vehicles, tools, and equipment, including trolleys, straps, blankets, and lifting aids.
4. Ensuring all staff are trained and competent to carry out their duties safely.
5. Reviewing this policy periodically and updating it as needed to reflect changes in legislation, our activities, or lessons learned from incidents.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, including drivers, porters, and supervisors, share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Employees are required to:
1. Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
2. Follow all safety instructions, safe systems of work, and training provided by Docklands Man and Van.
3. Use vehicles, equipment, and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.
4. Report hazards, near misses, and accidents promptly so that corrective measures can be taken.
5. Refrain from any behaviour that could compromise safety, including the misuse of equipment or working under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our moving and transport activities to identify potential hazards and implement control measures. Typical hazards include manual handling, slips and trips, vehicle operations, working in stairwells and corridors, and handling fragile, bulky, or heavy items.
To manage these risks, Docklands Man and Van:
1. Plans removals in advance wherever possible, considering access routes, parking, loading areas, and any special lifting requirements.
2. Adopts safe manual handling techniques, including team lifting where appropriate, to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
3. Ensures that vehicles are loaded and secured safely so that items do not move during transit and exits remain unobstructed.
4. Keeps working areas as tidy as reasonably practicable, reducing the risk of slips, trips, and falls for staff and customers.
5. Adjusts working methods to take account of environmental conditions such as poor lighting or wet and uneven surfaces.
Training and Competence
Docklands Man and Van recognises that proper training is essential to maintain health and safety standards. We provide staff with training and guidance relevant to their roles, including:
1. Induction training covering general health and safety requirements, safe conduct at customer premises, and emergency procedures.
2. Instruction in safe lifting and carrying techniques, use of handling equipment, and correct loading and securing of goods.
3. Driver training and guidance on safe driving practices, vehicle checks, and defensive driving.
4. Ongoing refresher training and toolbox talks where necessary, particularly when new equipment, procedures, or risks are introduced.
Vehicles, Equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment
We maintain our vehicles and handling equipment in safe working order. Regular inspections and servicing are carried out and any defects are reported and rectified as a priority. Staff must not operate any vehicle or equipment that they suspect to be unsafe.
Where identified by risk assessment, suitable personal protective equipment may be provided, such as gloves, safety footwear, or high-visibility clothing. Employees are required to use such equipment as instructed and to report any damage, loss, or need for replacement.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Docklands Man and Van is committed to safeguarding customers and the public during our operations. Our teams will:
1. Work carefully within customer homes, offices, and communal areas to avoid damage and minimise disruption.
2. Where reasonably practicable, signpost or verbally highlight potential trip hazards, trailing straps, or areas of restricted access.
3. Take extra care when moving items in shared areas, pavements, and parking bays to ensure the safety of passers-by.
4. Exercise consideration for neighbours and other occupants, especially in busy urban environments and multi-occupancy buildings.
Accidents, Incidents, and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to management. This enables us to investigate the cause, record the incident, and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
In the event of an emergency, such as fire, serious injury, or road traffic collision, employees must follow established emergency procedures, prioritise safety, and cooperate fully with the emergency services.
Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement
Docklands Man and Van will monitor compliance with this Health and Safety Policy through supervision, inspections, and review of incident reports. Where necessary, we will revise our procedures, provide additional training, or introduce new control measures to improve safety performance.
This policy is reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in our operations or relevant legislation. It is made available to employees and customers on request and reflects our ongoing commitment to safe, professional removal services.
